Planning: Representation In Our Music Video

In music videos, certain characters appear, the protagonist usually being the artist. It is all about the representation on the protagonist and other characters within the text, that depend on how the audience receive it. This post will be looking at how we will represent our artist and any other characters in our video.

The Protagonist
She will be our artist, portrayed by Hayley as her individual look is fun and outgoing, we believed that she would fit our criteria well and we want to dress her in girly, casual/rock costume to give that carefree look.. In the video props such as a vodka bottle, sunglasses, and a policeman’s hat will be used. This will add to the party/outgoing girl representation. We will represent the artist as wild, happy and fun. This outgoing personality will make her inspiring to her target audience

Her costume will involve jean shorts, baggy t shirts, skirts, dresses and minimal accessories –We plan on making several costume changes to fit with the theme of the music video, and to fit in with the lyrics of the song. Costume changes also keep the audience interested.

Other Characters
we have planned for our video to be purely performance based where we see the artist showing attitude, dancing and singing the lyrics of the song. We will use fast paced editing to show different , footage of the artist, different costumes, singing and dancing.

We plan on avoiding stereotypes as best we can as our target audience frequently make a point, through media texts, that they, young people and teenagers, would sooner be seen as people and not labels. As our video is performance based, the chance of showing any stereotypes will be unlikely as there are no characters present in the footage, other than our artist.
