"Genres are created through a process of repetition and recognition leading to anticipation and expectation." - Graham Burton
This explains why genres use the same conventions over and over again to create a product that the audience expects and is familiar with. This pleases an audience as they like to know what to expect so they will carry on watching the product.
Nick Lacey stated that genre texts are always a combination of the "familiar and the unexpected."
When genre is familar, it allows the audience to relate to certain conventions but then there is also always something new to keep them interested in the text and the conventions are then always evolving
